The Wardrobe has been part of the Leeds music scene for more than a quarter of a century. Founded in 1999 as a jazz venue in the heart of the city's cultural quarter, it has grown into a home for a wide range of genres while never losing sight of where it started.

The set-up is a generous one. A large bar and restaurant sits above a 400-capacity venue that hosts hundreds of performances a year, and the upstairs bar has become known for live funk on Saturday nights.

In 2024 The Wardrobe celebrated its 25th birthday with a full year of events. The Libertines opened the celebrations with an intimate, sold-out show in February, and in August Corinne Bailey Rae played the venue while The Vaccines took over the 400-capacity room for a two-night residency.

The anniversary year also brought a refit of the bar, which reopened in late August, and a birthday party on 20 September 2024, 25 years to the day since the doors first opened. Throughout the year the first 25 people through the door on the last Friday of each month were treated to a free pint, a thoughtful thank you to regulars.

The jazz connection remains strong. The Yorkshire Evening Post listed Mercury Prize-winning jazz act Ezra Collective at the venue in its weekend gig guide in September 2026, a sign that the room still attracts some of the most exciting names in the genre.

Just as important is The Wardrobe's role in supporting the next generation. In July 2025 it hosted a youth showcase featuring bands from more than a dozen schools in the area, including a jazz band from Leeds Junior Conservatoire, and its programme has also included concerts by the Leeds Youth Jazz-Rock Orchestra.

That mix of big names, local regulars and young players gives The Wardrobe a warm, grounded feel. It is a place where you might catch an international act one night and a school band giving their first public performance the next.

The Wardrobe is on St Peter's Square, close to Leeds Playhouse and the Quarry Hill cultural quarter. Upcoming gigs and events are listed on its website, and the bar and restaurant upstairs make it easy to turn a show into a full evening out.
