Otley Courthouse volunteers keep the arts thriving in a historic setting

In the heart of Otley, a former 19th-century magistrates' court has become one of the friendliest arts venues in the Leeds area. Otley Courthouse brings theatre, comedy, film, music and community events to the town, all in a building with real character.
The venue opened in its current form in 2004, giving the historic courthouse a new purpose as a place for culture rather than justice. Since then it has built a loyal audience across Wharfedale and beyond.
What sets it apart is the people who run it. The Courthouse is predominantly run by a team of more than 100 volunteers, who help with everything that goes into staging events, from welcoming audiences to keeping the programme moving.
The programme is impressively varied for a community venue. In March 2026 the Wharfedale Observer highlighted theatre, comedy and film coming to the Courthouse, and its listings show a broad mix across the year.
Recent events have included a sold-out performance of Drip Drop Theatre's All Those On Board, an Otley Arts Kollektive showcase celebrating local creativity, and an Aireborough Voices concert in November 2025.
That mix of touring work and local talent is what makes the Courthouse such a valuable part of town life. It gives audiences the chance to see professional performers close to home while also offering a stage to community groups and artists from the area.
There is also something special about watching a show in a building with so much history. The setting adds a sense of occasion to every performance, whether it is a comedy night, a concert or a film screening.
For anyone who loves live performance, venues like this are a reminder of how much a town gains when people give their time to a shared space. Every ticket sold helps keep the lights on and the stage busy for the next show.
Otley Courthouse publishes its full events programme on its website, where visitors can book tickets and find out how to get involved as a volunteer.
