Leeds has a strong vintage scene, and one of its newer success stories is North South Vintage. The independent clothing store has quickly become a favourite in Headingley, and it is now taking its first major step into the city centre.

The business opened on Headingley Lane in 2022. Its location, close to the city's student heartland and busy neighbourhood high streets, has helped it build a following among shoppers looking for something a little different from the usual chains.

Before its latest move, the shop had already tested the waters in town. Leeds-List reported in November 2024 that North South Vintage was opening a store in Thornton's Arcade, joining its flagship on Headingley Lane.

Now the Yorkshire Evening Post reports that the retailer is taking over the former Ann Summers store on Lands Lane, one of the main pedestrian routes through the city centre. It is the business's first major expansion.

The move also brings new life to a prominent unit. The shop has been largely vacant since Ann Summers relocated to Commercial Street in July 2023, so a busy independent filling the space is welcome news for the street.

The expansion is creating jobs too. Ahead of opening, North South Vintage was recruiting a store manager and flexible store assistants to staff the new site.

It is an encouraging story for Leeds. Independent shops expanding into central units show that there is real demand for second-hand and pre-loved clothing, and that local businesses can thrive alongside bigger names.

Vintage shopping also fits neatly with a more thoughtful approach to fashion, giving good clothes a second life. For shoppers, a bigger city centre store should mean more rails to explore and more chance of finding that perfect piece. Every visit is a little different, because no two vintage rails are ever quite the same.

North South Vintage can be found on Headingley Lane, with its city centre store on Lands Lane. It is worth following the shop online for opening news and new stock.
