Few music venues can claim a backstory quite like Hyde Park Book Club. The building on Headingley Lane was once a petrol station, later a fancy dress shop, and today it is one of the liveliest independent cultural spaces in Leeds.

Co-founder Jack Simpson took on the site in 2015, and the venue opened its doors in 2016. It started out as a café and has steadily grown into a home for live music, DJs, readings, quizzes and all manner of creative events.

Simpson has described it as a living room for the entire community, and the phrase fits. By day, people drop in for coffee and conversation among the shelves. In the evenings and at weekends the mood shifts as bands, DJs and performers take over.

The venue now runs two spaces for shows, with capacities of 150 and 45, which makes it a natural stepping stone for artists building an audience. The club's own account describes a packed calendar of around 60 events a month, a remarkable pace for an independent venue of its size.

Recent listings show the breadth of the programme. In 2025 the Book Club welcomed touring acts including Gecko, Natalie Evans and Youth Sector, and it hosted a quiz as part of the Leeds Literary Festival in June 2025, a reminder that books remain part of its identity.

That literary thread runs through the whole place. Visit Leeds notes a bookshop with a section dedicated to Yorkshire writers, along with a bottle shop and a basement and outdoor area that give the venue extra room to breathe on busy nights.

What makes Hyde Park Book Club special is its sense of welcome. It is the kind of place where a first-time open mic performer, a student looking for a quiet corner and a touring band can all feel equally at home, and that mix is exactly what keeps the neighbourhood coming back.

Hyde Park Book Club is at 27-29 Headingley Lane, close to Hyde Park and the universities. The latest gig listings and events are published on its website, and it is worth booking ahead for popular shows in the smaller room.
