For generations of Leeds music fans, a trip into town has meant a stop at Crash Records. The independent shop has been part of city life since the mid-1980s and remains a favourite for anyone who loves guitar music.

Crash first opened on Woodhouse Lane, near the university, in 1985. Two years later it moved to The Headrow, where its distinctive two-storey shopfront has been a landmark ever since.

The shop's current owner, Ian De-Whytell, has a long history with the place. His ambition to run it came true in 1998, when previous owner Steven Mulhaire told him he was looking to sell and asked if he was interested. He has been at the helm ever since.

Crash specialises in indie, rock, punk, metal and alternative music, and its shelves reflect decades of knowledge about those scenes. It is the kind of shop where browsing turns into conversation, and where staff recommendations carry real weight.

It is also much more than a place to buy records. Crash has long been a go-to spot for gig tickets in Leeds, and it sells ticket bundles that tie in with new releases. The shop has worked on promotions with record companies too, including album launch gigs in small venues around the city, giving fans the chance to see artists up close.

The building has another treat for crate diggers. Wall of Sound, a second-hand record shop, operates in the basement, so a single visit can take in brand new releases upstairs and pre-loved finds below.

In an age of streaming, Crash's longevity says a lot about the loyalty of Leeds music fans and the value of a well-run independent. The Yorkshire Evening Post has described it as one of the city's most loved music shops, and it continues to play a part in the wider live music scene through its tickets and in-store activity.

Crash Records is on The Headrow in Leeds city centre, within easy walking distance of the main shopping streets. Its website has details of new releases and gig tickets, though nothing beats calling in and having a browse in person.
